Uni Jazz Orchestra Regensburg played studio concert
Under the direction of pianist and composer Lorenz Kellhuber the Uni Jazz Orchestra Regensburg were guests at Blackbird Music Studio on Saturday. Besides workshops and rehearsals, a studio concert in the evening was part of the UJO’s schedule. Of course, it was recorded. Next to Kellhuber, trumpet player Benny Brown (Roger Cicero Big Band) supported the group playing pieces written by Stefan Schultze and others.
Norwegian jazz musician Andrea Rydin Berge in the studio
For the recordings of her upcoming album vocalist and piano player Andrea Rydin Berge from Oslo has been in our studio since yesterday. Together with cello player Moritz Ebert and her producer Thomas Lange she is recording her new songs in which she soulfully combines jazz and pop music. At the end of her recordings she will play an exclusive studio concert tomorrow night!
Saxophone player Kirk MacDonald played exclusive studio concert
Last Saturday Kanadian star saxophone player Kirk MacDonald played an exclusive concert at Blackbird Music Studio. In front of 70 guests he presented own compositions as well as pieces from Thelonious Monk together with Fabio Miano and Steven Reich on piano and Rhodes. Photo: David Beecroft.

Newcomer Erik Leuthäuser: demo recording
Yesterday young jazz singer Erik Leuthäuser was at Blackbird Music Studio in order to record some demos together with the bass player and producer Greg Cohen and guitarist Daníel Friðrik Böðvarsson.
Young pianist Lorenz Kellhuber played exciting solo concert
In a very intimate atmosphere 26-year-old piano player Lorenz Kellhuber thrilled the audience with one of his freely improvised solo concerts at Blackbird Music Studio yesterday. The concert was recorded and filmed.
Jazz quartet Berlin 21 to record new album at our place
For the recordings of the second album of his project Berlin 21 drummer Torsten Zwingenberger is at Blackbird Music Studio, together with Lionel Haas (p), Martin Lillich (b) and – new in the band – 25 year old guitarist Tim Seier from Canada. Soundwise there’s more experimenting happening than for the debut “Capital Letters”. Mixing is scheduled for next week!
Abisko Lights Album Recordings
Jazz, chamber music and the soundtracks of films that haven’t been filmed yet. This is one possibility to describe the music of Abikso Lights in three key words. For the recordings of their new album Dirk Flatau (p), Hannes Daerr (bcl), Tabea Schrenk (clo), Niklas Lukassen (b) and Benni Wellenbeck (dr) moved into the studio. On Sunday, February 14th, 2016, they will play an exclusive studio concert on top, together with the Götz Rausch Orchestra!
Manuel Schmiedel Trio visiting from New York
Together with his two sidemen Rick Rosato (b) and Mark Schilders (dr) pianist Manuel Schmiedel visited the studio today to record some of his new tunes. In the next two days he will play a concert at the Berlin Blue Note and at the A-Trane with his trio. Schmiedel studied at the Berlin Jazz Institute und got a scholarship at the New York University where he lives and works at the moment.
Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eric Revis and Nasheet Waits at Blackbird Music Studio
After their performances at the Zig Zag Jazz Festival in Berlin, Kurt Rosenwinkel (g), Eric Revis (b) and Nasheet Waits (dr) met yesterday at Blackbird Music Studio for a spontaneous recording session. A very exciting project of three great musicians! The recordings were engineered by Sebastian Ohmert.
Matti Oehl Quartet recorded first album
The Matti Oehl Quartet with Tom Friedrich (dr), Robert Lucaciu (b), Johannes Enders (ts) and Matti Oehl (as) recorded their first album at Blackbird Music Studio last Saturday. It was essential to them to get the opportunity to record live, without headphones and in one room. Our live room was the perfect place.
Rolf Kühn recording new album for MPS/Edel
Jazz clarinet player Rolf Kühn recorded his upcoming album for MPS/Edel at Blackbird Music Studio last week. On guitar Ronny Graupe, on bass Johannes Funk, on drums Christian Lillinger. We filmed the recordings and we are looking forward to present the finished EPK very soon.
Max Doehlemann and his “Azur” project at Blackbird Music Studio
In the last three days we worked with the Berlin composer and piano player Max Doehlemann and the great musicians of his “Azur” project with Christian Schantz on bass, Martin Fonfara on drums plus the two Israeli artists Hadass Pal Yarden (vocals) and Yaniv Ovadia (vocals, saz). The project is about the musical connection between Berlin, Istanbul and Jerusalem. Blue Note meets oriental tonality and shows the variety of the Turkish-Jewish and Kurdish-Jewish music tradition. At the studio eight songs were recorded, three of them were captured on camera.
Johan Leijonhufvud Mighty Mezz – “Vol. 1” in stores from June 6th, 2014
On three days in September 2013 the Swedish guitarist Johan Leijonhufvud recorded the songs for his new project Mighty Mezz at Blackbird Music Studio, together with Christian von der Goltz (p), Lars Gühlcke (b) and Tobias Backhaus (dr). The new album is simply called “Vol. 1”. It includes 14 great jazz tracks and will be released on June 6th, 2014 by Blackbird Music. Torsten Zwingenberger’s BERLIN 21 will release debut album in May 2014
Together with Lionel Haas (p), Patrick Farrant (g) and Martin Lillich (b), drummer Torsten Zwingenberger has started the project BERLIN 21. In November 2013 the band recorded the songs for their debut album “CAPITAL LETTERS” on two days at Blackbird Music Studio. The record will be released by Blackbird Music on May 16th, 2014. It will include a bonus DVD that features the complete recording sessions. This is the album teaser:
